Murad Bey, Mameluke Leader
Portrait of Murad Bey. Although his forces were scattered by Napoleon at the Battle of the Pyramids, Murad Bey, shown seated at an open window overlooking a tributary of the Nile, regrouped his fighters and remained an intractable enemy of the French. It was while pursuing Murad Bey into Upper Egypt that the French discovered the monuments at Dendera, Thebes, Edfu, and Philae.
