The first week of May will bring two Linda Hall Library events that will share the life of one of Britain’s best known engineers and explore the science behind what we eat. On May 3, Robert Hulse, Director of London’s Brunel Museum, will share the life and work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a Victorian era engineer who helped build the first tunnel beneath a major river (the Thames) among a number of innovations in his career. Although Brunel is well known in Europe, his work is largely unfamiliar to American audiences. The lecture will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Library. This event is co-sponsored by the English Speaking Union, Kansas City Branch. On May 5, Sara Clark, Senior Manager of Food Science and Regulatory Affairs at Russell Stover Candies, will discuss “The Chemistry of Taste: Food Science and What We Eat.” Ms. Clark will share some of the science and technology involved in what we eat and share the day-to-day work of a scientist in the food industry. The event is part of the Library’s SOCIAL Science series. Library doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public; however, we request that participants register for an e-ticket to attend.
